Summary of Research Conducted to Develop a Quarantine Treatment for the Codling Moth in Walnuts for Export to Japan

چکیده
In 1980-1983 small-scale tests were conducted and background information was obtalned to determine the feasibility of developing a quarantine treatment with methyl bromide (MB) for the codling moth (Cydia pomonella La) infesting in-shall walnuts. Some of the studies conducted at this time included basic dose mortality responses of diapausing and nondiapausing larvae, residue determinations and concentrations for the proposed fumigation.

Nonchemical Postharvest Treatments/techniques for Codling Mothon Inshell Walnuts: Disruption of Mating and Monitoring of Activity Using Sex Pheromone
Mating disruption of a field pest (codling moth) is being tested in a stored-product situation by placing pheromone dispensers in bagged walnuts in storage at 77°F. Three series of tests have resulted in 39-100% control when a single pair of moths was present in each test bag and in 42-87% control when four pairs of moths were present in each test bag. Future tests will include field collected ...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Survival and Reproduction of the Codling Moth in Harvested Walnuts
Previous studies supported by the Walnut Board had shown that survival of codling moth (CM) larvae is proportional to their age at the time of harvest and that overall survival is poor compared to siblings reared on artificial diets. In 1986 considerably more data were collected on the infestation levels of codling moth in different varieties of walnuts. In addition, the population structure at...
متن کاملRadio Frequency Heating of Walnuts and Sweet Cherries to Control Insects after Harvest
Radio frequency (RF) heating has been explored as a potential non-chemical method to control insects in harvested walnuts and as a quarantine treatment for ‘Bing’ sweet cherries. Walnuts were heated to 50 to 90°C. Heating walnuts to 55°C or higher resulted in 100% mortality of fifth instar navel orangeworm, and heating to 80°C had no effect on walnut quality. Moisture content had a significant ...
متن کاملPostharvest treatment to control codling moth in fresh apples using water assisted radio frequency heating
Apples destined for export to Japan and South Korea are currently disinfested for codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), using methyl bromide fumigation. Restrictions and limitations imposed on the uses of methyl bromide have increased interest in developing alternative non-chemical quarantine treatments. It is imperative that the treatment is effective against codling mot...
متن کاملMethyl Bromide Quarantine Treacment for Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in Unshelled Yalnuts
Unshelled walnuts were artificially infested with diapausing fifth ins tar codling moth, Cvdia nomonella (L.), larvae and fumigated with 56 g/m3 methyl bromide for 4 h at 15.6°C under a reduced pressure of 100 mm Hg. When 34,959 were treated, one larva survived, indicating a survival rate of 2.91 larvae per 100~000 treated. The upper 95% CL for this survival rate was 13.8 larvae per 100,000 tre...
